Northander is the largest city in Aborl, and is the key gateway through which most interaction with the outside world occurs. The eastern coast of Aborl is notoriously dangerous for ships, with the only usable exception being the port of Northander in the northeast corner of the kingdom.
Northander is one of the oldest human settlements in Aborl, and it has been the kingdom’s largest settlement through most of recorded history.
Northander has traditionally been ruled by a member of the Ryndakone family, but during the Draconic Sovereignty, the family was relegated to a minor family status along with all the other human noble families. Nevertheless, the Ryndakone family maintained their wealthy status, making them an influential force in the city above most of the drakan families. So naturally when the dragons left, Charles Ryndakone was able to quickly consolidate support and secure the city. Indeed, Charles even briefly contemplated a play for the crown, but the arrival of the lost heir and the jealousy of the other nobles quickly put an end to that dream.
More recently, Charles has been forced to contend with the growing strength of the Order of Affliction and the zealot, the Seer. Almost overnight, Charles has found himself almost a prisoner, as fear of assassination by Order mobs keeps him bottled up in his own castle. He still controls the town’s guard and a unit of troops, in addition to his own household trooops, but the size of the mobs keeps those in check. For the moment, Northander is largely under the sway of the Seer. So far, she has not made any move to sweep away Charles or his bureaucracy, but there is little doubt that such a move will come soon.
